School buses are designed to be safer than passenger vehicles in preventing crashes and injuries. Ohio, like every state, has implemented stop-arm laws to protect children from other motorists.
School buses are created to be highly visible and include safety features including flashing red and yellow lights, stop-sign arms and cross-view mirrors. They also include protective seating and rollover protection features due to the high crash rating standards required on school buses.
Students getting on and off school buses are protected by laws that prohibit drivers to pass buses that are stopped dropping off and picking up students. Every step of your child’s daily bus ride has been carefully considered and accounted for in federal, state and local lawmaking, and our dedicated transportation specialists are always looking out for them. #RepthatA
The Auto Tech Car Show is tomorrow from 11 am - 3 pm! #RepthatA
Amid the excitement of finally arriving home after a long day, students must keep safety at the forefront of their minds. When getting off the bus, students should:
- Always cross the street in front of the bus, so bus drivers and other motorists can see them
- Never walk behind the bus where other motorists cannot see them
- Tell the driver immediately if they drop something near the bus and wait for their assistance to retrieve it
- Gather their belongings carefully and carry them off the bus without dropping or tripping over them
- Be mindful of other students when leaving their seats and maneuvering down the aisle

Getting on the bus can be exciting for kids as they start their day and see classmates and friends, but they should always prioritize safety. In order to safely board the bus, students should:
- Wait until the bus has come to a complete stop and the door opens before approaching the bus or standing up on the bus
- Use the handrail next to the stairs for support
- Walk to their seat calmly without rushing
- Secure any loose or hanging objects like straps on a backpack, lanyards or drawstrings on a hood so they cannot be caught in the bus door
- Be kind to the driver and other students on the bus
