Students in Megan Harper and Cindy Gaines class are learning about oviparous animals (animals that lay eggs). Their study began as students used their imaginations and acted out what it might be like to be inside an egg and what they would have to do to get out. Using hand lenses, students observed real eggs of different sizes and different colors from various birds. They also learned that birds aren't the only animals that lay eggs! Students searched for eggs in the classroom and in each one found an oviparous animal. They learned that other animals, such as spiders, snakes, fish, and lizards also lay eggs. Through reading nonfiction books, students discovered octopus lay thousands of eggs at a time, and turtles lay their eggs in the sand. Students also practiced word families by blending beginning and ending sounds found on eggs, and practiced addition facts by adding numbers found on eggs. They are now experts on oviparous animals!
